John Richard Flanegan, 78, died September 19, 2013 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney, Iowa. He was born December 26, 1934 to Samuel Dwight and Flora Mae Kleinschmidt Flanegan in West Lancaster Township, Keokuk County, Iowa. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1954. On July 15, 1956 he married Carol Ruth Lampert in Muscatine. He later married Jackie Miller - Litwiller on May 28, 1982 at his mother' house in Sigourney. She died October 4, 2001.
After graduating he went to North Carolina with his Uncle Harold Kleinschmidt to learn the skill of meat cutting. John returned and was the meat manger at Benners in Sigourney. In 1976 he owned and operated John's Food Center in North English, then opened John's Grocery in South English, John's Jack and Jill in Keota and the Norway Meat Locker. Later he worked at Fareway in Iowa City and retired in 2006 and in 2010 he moved back to Sigourney. John loved to sing and spend time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Danny Flanegan, his wives Carol and Jackie, granddaughter Sarah Mae McCombs, stepson Jimmy Litwiller and sister Winnie Jean Ferguson.
He is survived by his children Jim (Becky) Flanegan of Wellman, Deb (Gordon) Troyer of North English, Vickie (Steve) Passmore of Kalona, Cindy (Barry) McCombs of North English, Lori (Floyd) Hopkins of North English, Lisa (Phillip) Johnson of Ankeny, stepdaughters Jeanie (John) Roop of Ollie, Jaynie (Sonny) Vontragher of Wellman, 29 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and sister Mary Ann (Stanley) Finch of Sigourney.
Funeral Service: Sunday 2:00 P.M. Holm Funeral Home, Sigourney, Iowa
Visitation: Saturday 4:00 - 8:00 P.M.
Burial: Pennington Cemetery
