John F. Gehrig 85, died February 24, 2012 at the Keokuk County Health Center. He was born on August 12, 1926 in Sigourney to John Ludwig and Marie Theresa Weber Gehrig. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1944. John served in the United States Navy during World War II. on the LST 524 in the Pacific Theater, he was at the invasion of Saipan and witnessed the atomic testing at Bikini Island. He married Nancy Coble in 1961 they later divorced. John was employed at the Natural Gas Pipline in Harper as a lineman for 37 years, retiring in 1986. On October 2, 1986 he married Joan Downey Starkey in Las Vegas, Nevada. He served as the maintenance man at St. Mary Catholic Church for many years. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Sigourney V.F.W. and LST Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepson Ted Starkey.
He is survived by his wife Joan, son Tony (Chris) Gehrig of Galesburg, Iowa, daughter
Susie Sines of Hedrick, 4 stepchildren Tim Starkey, Toni Pettie, and Twyla Proctor of
Washington State, Terry Starkey of Sigourney, five grandchildren, six step grandchildren.
Funeral Service: Wednesday 10:30 St. Mary Catholic Church Sigourney
Burial: Pleasant Grove Cemetery Sigourney
Visitation: Tuesday 4:00- 8:00 with a Prayer Service at 4:00 P.M. at Holm Funeral Home
A memorial fund has been established.
