William Harry "Bill" Yates, 94, of Sigourney, IA passed away on March 16, 2012, at the Manor House Care Center, in Sigourney. Bill, the son of S.T. (Bud) and Mabel Yates, was born on June 5, 1917 in Necedah, Wisconsin. He graduated from Sigourney High School. Bill married Evelyn Lucille Pottenger on September 14, 1938. In 2011 they celebrated 73 years of marriage. Though the years they lived and worked on the family farm north of Sigourney where they raised purebred Angus cattle. They retired in 1975.
Bill was a 4-H leader, a long-time Farm Bureau member and a member of the Sigourney Christian Church. Both Bill and Lucille volunteered at the Food Bank and helped deliver Meals-On-Wheels.
Bill loved farming, playing cards, sports and visiting with friends and family. He was a Cubs and Hawkeye fan. In 1932 he showed the Grand Champion Steer at the Iowa State Fair.
He is survived by his wife Lucille, two sons Dan (Pat) of Waterloo, IA, Jim of Des Moines, IA, two grandchildren Mike (Erin) of Waterloo, Lisa of Austin, TX, three great granddaughters Samantha and Katelyn of Austin, TX and Emily of Waterloo, a brother Don (Peggy) of Sigourney and a sister Beverly Levine of Golden Valley, MN.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents and brother Dean (Marian) of Sigourney.
The family would like to sincerely thank Barb Fritchen and the staff of caretakers at the Manor House for taking excellent care of our father the last two years.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday March 20, 2012 at the Sigourney Christian Church
Burial: Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Sigourney, Iowa
Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Holm Funeral Home
